The Vienna public transport operator Wiener Linien, in collaboration with local energy supplier Wien Energie, has commissioned a photovoltaic facade system at Floridsdorf station. The solar facade was installed during modernization work on the station’s east entrance. While the transparent section continues to allow daylight into the building, around 60 percent of the facade now serves to generate electricity and provide shade, according to Wiener Linien.

The facade system and another PV system on the roofs of the station and the neighboring signal box were already commissioned in June. By the end of September, around 120,000 kilowatt hours of electricity had been generated. In July alone, the systems covered around 60 percent of the electricity required on site.

With a total output of around 260 kilowatts, Wiener Linien can produce more electricity on sunny days than is needed on site for lighting, elevators, and escalators. Surplus electricity is forwarded to neighboring subway stations. In total, this covers around one-third of the annual electricity requirements of the Floridsdorf station.
