USA counts more than 1.3 million solar PV installations with a capacity of 40 GW

The United States count more than 1.3 million solar PV installations with a cumulative capacity of over 40 GW. The solar market nearly doubled its annual record, topping out at 14,625 MW of PV installed in 2016. According to the latest figures announced by GTM Research and the US Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), this represents a 95 percent increase over 2015’s then record-breaking 7,493 MW. »For the first time ever, U.S. solar ranked as the number one source of new electric generating capacity additions on an annual basis«, said Abigail Ross Hopper, SEIA’s president and CEO. Installed solar capacity accounted for 39 percent of new capacity additions across all fuel types in 2016.
The market mainly was driven by the utility-scale segment with a growth rate of 145 percent. »22 states each added more than 100 MW,« said Cory Honeyman, GTM Research's associate director of U.S. solar research. Community solar added more than 200 MW, led by Minnesota and Massachusetts. Furthermore, for the first time since 2011, non-residential installation growth surpassed residential solar growth, which posted 2,583 MW (+19 percent year-over-year).
GTM’s and SEIA’s will publish its »U.S. Solar Market Insight 2016« on March 9.
