US utility receives approval for 460 MW solar farm to replace coal power

Minneapolis, Minnesota-based utility Xcel Energy Inc. on Thursday (Sept. 15) received approval from the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission to build the »Sherco Solar« power plant near Minneapolis. According to a »CBS News« report, Xcel plans to use solar power from the 460-megawatt solar park to replace some of the electricity from its three coal-fired power plants at the same site, which will go offline between 2023 and 2030. Regulators have also approved Xcel to pass the cost of building the solar farm onto the electricity price.
