Unusual self-consumption concept for shopping center in South Africa

Power solutions provider AEG Power Solutions has commissioned a 1 megawatt (MW) Convert SC Flex storage converter at the Rembrandt Mall in Paarl, South Africa. This can be used in combination with a photovoltaic system and the 0.9 megawatt hour (MWh) battery storage system to create an island grid.
The batteries are not primarily used to store solar power by the Solar Plexus Africa installed system, but are charged by cheap nighttime electricity from the grid. During the day, when frequent power outages are imminent and electricity prices are very high, the building is disconnected from the grid and draws its power from the solar modules and the storage system, which will be expanded to 1.2 MWh in the coming weeks. Winter and rainy seasons are covered by a genset.
