Sunmaxx begins construction of PVT module production facility

Dresden, Germany-based Sunmaxx PVT GmbH has begun construction of a production facility for photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) hybrid modules in Ottendorf-Okrilla, near Dresden. The annual capacity of the production is 50 megawatts. Currently, the conversion work of the site and the preparation of the hall for the production machines are taking place. The commissioning of the first line should take place by the end of the year.
Sunmaxx states the efficiency of its PVT modules at 80 percent. This is made up of 20 percent electrical and 60 percent thermal efficiency, from which the manufacturer derives the overall efficiency. In practice, however, the coupled production of electricity and heat only works under favorable conditions, as the system must be designed to meet either electricity or heat demand. The alternative of generating more solar power and using part of it to generate heat is usually more target-oriented and less expensive. Hybrid modules, which first appeared on the market at the end of the 1990s, have thus not yet been able to establish themselves. The factory planned by Sunmaxx will therefore be the world's largest PVT module production facility at present, despite its low capacity.
