In their report »Renewable Energy and Jobs: Annual Review 2022,« the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) and the International Labor Organization (ILO) count 12.7 million jobs in the renewable energy industry worldwide at the end of 2021. This is 700,000 more than a year earlier, a 5.5 percent increase despite the Covid-19 pandemic and economic crisis.
The solar industry stands for the largest share of workforce, according to the report. It accounts for 4.29 million jobs, just over a third of the total, followed by liquid biofuels (2.42 million), hydropower (2.37 million) and wind (1.37 million). About 63 percent of solar jobs are in China. However, the study does not break down what share of this is accounted for by production and what share is accounted for by planning, sales and installation of PV systems.
