Spain auctions renewable energy power plants with 3 GW capacity

Spain's Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO, Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y el Reto Demográfico) has announced the first renewable energy auction in 2021. Accordingly, 3,000 MW will be tendered, of which at least 1,000 MW will be for photovoltaics and another 1,000 MW for onshore wind (we reported). The remainder is to be auctioned on an open technology basis. Bids from a single company or a group of companies may not exceed 50 percent of the quota (1,500 MW).
The awards will be made and published on January 26, 2021. The winners will receive power purchase agreements (PPA). Their maximum term is 12 years for photovoltaics, solar thermal, wind and hydropower, and 15 years for biomass and biogas. The country plans to install 60 GW of renewable energy power plants over the next decade as part of a National Energy and Climate Plan (Plan Nacional Integrado de Energía Clima, PNIEC).
