South Africa announced the first bidding round in response to the Section 34 Determination published in September 2020 by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA). The Request for Proposal (RFP) for the procurement of 2,600 MW under the Renewable Energy IPP Procurement Programme Bid Window 5 will include 1,600 MW from wind and 1,000 MW from solar PV. The closing date for the bid submission is August 4th, 2021. The Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy's objective is to get these projects connected to the grid »as soon as possible.«
In October 2020, the agency set a target to tender of more than 13 GW to be delivered from a mix of energy sources. The government intends to release four more RfP within the next 12 month. This includes another 2.6 GW from renewable energy, 3 GW from gas, 1.5 GW from coal and 513 MW from battery storage.
