Solar park dazzles pilots: Amsterdam Schiphol Airport can only use runway to a limited extent

Because pilots are disturbed by light reflections from a nearby solar park when landing, the affected runway “Polderbaan” at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport has been closed for landings in sunny weather between 10:00 and 12:00 since yesterday (March 4). The weather forecast is currently being checked daily to determine whether the runway can be used or not. The Dutch Air Traffic Control (LVNL), KLM, EasyJet and Schiphol, which work together as part of the Integrated Safety Management System (ISMS), were forced to take this measure in order to guarantee the safety of air traffic, the airport authority announced.

The municipality of Haarlemmermeer and the Energy Solutions Group, owner of the solar park that went into operation at the end of last year, are looking for a solution in consultation with the aviation sector, according to the press release. The measure is provisionally valid until March 23.
