SMA supplies battery storage to RWE

SMA Solar Technology AG is supplying battery storage systems to RWE AG with a total capacity of 117 megawatts. RWE is planning to build a storage project at its sites in Lingen (Lower Saxony) and Werne (North Rhine-Westphalia) to stabilize the grid. SMA is delivering 420 lithium-ion battery racks, enclosed in 47 overseas containers. A total of 47 Sunny Central Storage UP 3450 battery inverters will be used there.
The batteries are virtually coupled with the RWE run-of-river power plants along the Moselle. By regulating the flow rate up and down at these plants, RWE is able to provide additional power as balancing energy. The investment volume for the project is around €50 million. Commissioning is targeted for the end of 2022.
According to RWE, other major projects are currently being implemented. The Group is working on projects involving redox flow storage and second-life batteries, in which decommissioned electric car batteries are used in stationary applications.
