SMA Altenso, a subsidiary of SMA Solar Technology AG, will supply inverters for a Cleanergy Solutions Namibia project. SMA announced that this will exceed the mark of one gigawatt of total output in delivered hydrogen applications. The current project combines photovoltaics, battery storage and hydrogen production.

‘We are proud of this gigawatt milestone and more than 80 successfully implemented hydrogen projects, most of which produce green hydrogen using PV and wind energy,’ says Jens-Eiko Birkholz, Head of Sales & Business Development at Altenso.
For the current project on the Atlantic coast of Namibia, Altenso is responsible for the system integration of the battery storage system (BESS) and is also the provider of the power-to-gas (P2G) solution for integrated hydrogen production. The solar park and battery inverter technology were installed and commissioned at the end of 2024. Commissioning of the hydrogen production is planned for mid-2025. The rectifier solution specially developed by SMA for hydrogen applications will be used.

Altenso has developed an innovative energy management system (EMS) for projects like this. This optimises sustainable hydrogen production on the basis of PV forecasts and dynamic demand profiles.
