SMA to double production capacity by 2024

German inverter and system technology provider SMA Solar Technology AG plans to expand its production capacity at its main site in Niestetal/Kassel from 21 gigawatts (GW) of inverter power today to »almost 40« GW in 2024. Construction of the new production facilities is scheduled to begin by the end of this year, and »systems destined primarily for the large-scale PV power plant segment« will be manufactured there. SMA announced the creation of around 200 new jobs.
The company did not provide details on the planned investment. The new 47,000-square-meter factory is to be built on a reserve site, part of which will be sold to a project planning company for this purpose. The latter will then build the factory according to SMA’s specifications and subsequently lease it out. A »long-term tenancy agreement« has already been signed, according to a statement.
The capacity expansion »will help us safeguard supply chains and gain greater independence from ever-changing trade conditions,« the company says. The capacity of the current manufacturing sites in Niestetal and in Modlniczka, Poland (electromagnetic components), is currently far from being utilized; in 2021, the company sold inverters totaling 13.58 GW (2020: 14.42 GW). For 2022, the company expects revenue of €0.9 billion to €1.05 billion ($0.96 to 1.12 billion), which is roughly in line with the €0.98 billion ($1.05 billion) result from 2021.
