Silicon producer Norwegian Crystals receives »strategic investment« from EU body EIT InnoEnergy

EIT InnoEnergy, an EU body belonging to the European Institute of Innovation and Technology and promoting renewable energy technologies, has agreed a »strategic investment« with Norwegian silicon manufacturer Norwegian Crystals AS. The two partners intend to »accelerate European photovoltaic ingots production« at Norwegian Crystals’ site in Glomfjord, according to a joint statement.
EIT InnoEnergy and Norwegian Crystals do not disclose the type and extent of the investment, but emphasize the context of the European Union’s »RePowerEU« plan, with its goal of achieving 45 gigawatts of annual PV installations this decade. Of this, 30 gigawatts are to come from European production. Norwegian Crystals aims to establish a gigawatt-scale production of silicon ingots and wafers at the former production site of REC Wafer Norway AS in Glomfjord with low-cost electricity from hydropower.
