Norwegian independent solar power producer Scatec Solar ASA announced that the South African Ministry of Energy has been awarded the African Renewables Programmes of the Year for Round four of South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Programme (REIPPP 4). Scatec Solar’s Upington project is one of the projects included in the programme.
In April 2015, Scatec Solar was awarded preferred bidder status for the three projects in Upington of 258 MW in the fourth bidding round under the REIPPP in South Africa. Scatec Solar will build, own and operate the solar power plants with a 42 percent shareholding. Norfund holds 18 percent, the surrounding Community of Upington 5 percent and a South African Black investor holds the remaining 35 percent of the equity.
Financial close for the projects was reached in April 2018. Construction started in third quarter 2018 with expected grid connection towards the end of 2019.
According to a former announcement, the plants are expected to produce 650 GWh annually. Scatec Solar will be the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) provider for the projects and provide Operation & Maintenance as well as Asset Management services to the power plants. The three projects involve a total investment of ZAR 4.76 billion ($0.4 billion).
