RWE commissions solar/storage power plant in the USA and starts construction work on project in Portugal

German Energy group RWE has commissioned the »Hickory Park« solar and storage power plant in the US state of Georgia. The plant combines 195.5 megawatts (AC) of photovoltaic capacity from single-axis tracking solar modules with a 40 megawatt / 80 megawatt-hour battery storage system. The power purchase agreement for the project with utility Georgia Power was signed back in November 2019. In April 2021, Norway’s Wärtsilä Corporation announced that it will supply a »GridSolv Quantum« storage system, software and control technology for Hickory Park. Inverters and other system technology are from Germany’s SMA Solar Technology AG. Construction began in November 2020, with commissioning originally announced for late 2021.
At the same time as the commissioning of Hickory Park, construction began on the 44-megawatt Morgavel solar power plant in Portugal. Here, bifacial solar modules – also with single-axis tracking – will be installed by the Portuguese branch of infrastructure company Omexom. The Portuguese company Construção e Manutenção Eletromecânica (CME) is carrying out the work for the substation and grid connection. Commissioning is scheduled for 2023.
