Sven Giegold, deputy party leader of Alliance 90/The Greens, criticizes the proposal by Economics Minister Katharina Reiche that operators of renewable energy plants should pay for the expansion of the power grids in the future. »This regulation would deliberately create uncertainty and slow down investment in citizen energy. It would also discourage investment by smaller companies. What may initially sound ‘fair’ is in fact a strategic intervention: wind and solar projects in the hands of citizens are to be slowed down, while fossil fuels continue to be favored,« said Giegold. »This attack on renewables is in line with Reiche’s determination to push through the construction of 40 new gas-fired power plants – against the advice of many energy experts and in violation of EU law. This would be a gift to the fossil fuel cartel, but a step backward for climate protection and a sustainable economy.«
Giegold predicts »a major confrontation between the fossil fuel cartel and the federal government on the one hand, and innovative energy transition companies, civil society, and us Greens on the other« in the coming months. Giegold: »We are currently consulting with many stakeholders on how we can win this battle for the energy transition in Germany and Europe.«
