PwC report: Australia must quickly build up its own silicon production

The Australian Silicon Action Plan, a report commissioned by the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) from business consultants Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) on the development of a domestic solar industry, sees the creation of production capacity for solar silicon as the first priority. The country has »great potential« to play a leading global role in the energy transition, but its dependence on overseas supply chains is an obstacle.
Like similar studies on the global solar industry, the PwC report sees a major problem in the »geographic concentration« in Asia, especially China. After the particularly urgent need to build up silicon production, the report sees - logically - the need for an Australian wafer and solar cell industry and, in a third phase, the creation of an »integrated supply chain.«
