Oman launches the development of two solar projects with a total capacity exceeding 1 GW

Oman Power and Water Procurement Company SAOC (OPWP), a member of Nama Group, launched two solar Independent Power Projects (IPPs) in Oman, namely, »Manah Solar I« and »Manah Solar II«. According to the company, this launch follows the successful tendering of OPWP’s first utility scale »Ibri II« solar project, which was awarded in April 2019 with targeted commercial operation date of June 2021.
The procurement of »Manah Solar I« and »Manah Solar II« is in support of the Government policy to encourage the use of renewable energy to meet the growing demand for electricity in Oman. The two projects will be built, owned and operated by the private sector and the scope of the projects includes financing, procurement, engineering, construction, operation and maintenance. Each project will attract investment of multiple hundreds of million dollars.
The projects will be located adjacent to each other at a site in Manah, approximately 150 km from Muscat. Each project will have a generation capacity between 500 MW to 600 MW. It is planned that the award of the project will be in Q3 2020 and the projects are to be commercially operational by Q4 2022.
