Mercedes presents EV with solar roof

German Mercedes-Benz AG has developed a prototype vehicle with a solar roof. The battery pack of the car, called »Vision EQXX,« stores nearly 100 kilowatt hours of energy. Propulsion is provided by a 150 kW / 204 hp electric motor on the rear axle, which enables a speed of 140 kilometers per hour at »efficiency mode«. At less than ten kilowatt hours per hundred kilometers, the consumption of this concept car is said to be more economical than any other vehicle, and the range on a single charge is said to be more than 1,000 kilometers.
Ultra-thin roof panels with 117 solar cells feed the electric system and thus provide up to 25 kilometers of additional range, the company says. However, the range figure is preliminary based on digital simulations in real-world traffic. The Vision EQXX has not undergone a type-approval process. It took a year and a half to construct and was presented in the run-up to the »Consumer Electronic Show«. It is expressly not a pre-model for possible series production, but serves only research purposes.
