Australian solar and storage power project developer Maoneng Group is planning one of the country’s largest photovoltaic and battery storage power plants with an installed capacity of 550 megawatts (MW) from single-axis tracking solar modules and a battery system with 400 MW and 1.6 gigawatt-hours of storage capacity. The »Merriwa Energy Hub« is to be built on a 780-hectare site south of the village of Merriwa (Upper Hunter Shire Council) in the state of New South Wales.
Once approval is granted, the company aims to complete construction within 18 months. Maoneng anticipates commissioning in 2025.
The power plant is to perform supply and grid stabilization tasks for the Australian transmission grid system National Electricity Market (NEM). It will be connected via its own substation to a 500-kilovolt line of the transmission system operator TransGrid running directly along the planned site.
