Lightyear continues operations with new company

The Dutch company Lightyear, developer of the solar electric cars of the same name, will continue in the form of a newly established company to ensure the production of the »Lightyear 2«. In January, insolvency had been filed for the production company of the »Lightyear 0« presented in 2019, and the series production of this model, which started in December 2022 at the Finnish contract manufacturer Valmet Automotive, with a last stated sales price of € 250,000 ($ 267,000), was discontinued. The »Lightyear 2« has been announced with a »target starting price« of € 40,000 ($ 42,700).
According to a press release, an »Individual Investor Group« initiated by entrepreneur Arnoud Aalbersberg has raised the necessary capital for the restart, acquiring € 8 million ($ 8.5 million) within one day. The state investment company Invest-NL, which leads the consortium of former stake holders, has thus given its consent to the transfer of intellectual property to the new company and intends to continue supporting it. Details are to be announced »in the coming days.«
