Researchers at Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin (HZB) and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin have presented a tandem cell made of CIGS (base cell) and perovskite (top cell) which, according to HZB, holds a new world record with an efficiency of 24.6 percent. This value was certified by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE. The high efficiency was achieved by improving the contact layers between the top and bottom cells, according to the HZB.
“We are confident that CIGS perovskite tandem cells can achieve much higher efficiencies, most likely up to over 30 percent,” says Rutger Schlatmann, spokesman for the Solar Energy Department at HZB.
