German PV equipment manufacturers see further upswing

For the third quarter of 2021, the photovoltaics division of the German Mechanical Engineering Industry Association (VDMA) reports »a renewed increase in incoming orders as well as a slight increase in sales.« Accordingly, an increase of more than 40 percent in incoming orders was recorded compared to the previous quarter. Sales had risen by nine percent, and by as much as 20 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year.
The trend in the photovoltaic machinery sector followed the German machinery sector as a whole, which recorded another double-digit increase in orders in October. »The growing orders in the photovoltaic equipment sector are pointing in the right direction. Particularly compared to the previous year, there is a clear increase and new dynamic,« said Jutta Trube, head of VDMA Photovoltaic Production Equipment.
However, domestic orders decreased to a share of less than ten percent in the third quarter. Orders from America also decreased. In contrast, incoming orders from China exceeded a share of 80 percent again for the first time in 2021. »On the Asian continent, China is the most important export market. Here, the largest order intake in the entire Asia region was counted in the third quarter,« the report said.
Meanwhile, due to supply bottlenecks and the Corona-related ongoing uncertainties, the companies' forecasts were »cautious.« However, demand remains strong, including outside the Asian region, and »new market opportunities« are seen. Peter Fath, Chairman of the Board of VDMA Photovoltaic Production Equipment, expects »a real recovery« in the second and third quarter of 2022.
