For the first time, the German Federal Network Agency has published figures on connection requests and approvals for battery storage systems. According to these figures, a total of 9,710 connection requests for battery storage systems at the medium-voltage level and above were submitted to grid operators in 2024. This figure does not include home storage systems owned by private individuals. The requested systems have a combined planned output of around 400 gigawatts and a storage capacity of around 661 gigawatt hours.

Currently, there are 921 battery storage systems with a connection at the medium-voltage level or above in operation. These systems have a net nominal output of around 2.3 gigawatts and a storage capacity of around 3.2 gigawatt hours.

In 2024, grid operators granted around 3,800 connection approvals for requests from 2024 and previous years. The approved battery storage systems have a combined output of around 25 gigawatts and a storage capacity of around 46 gigawatt hours. However, as connection commitments only bind grid operators, it does not necessarily follow that all projects will be implemented by applicants.
This information is based on the current monitoring survey and, for technical reasons, only covers the year 2024. Developments in 2025 will be published in due course.

The Federal Network Agency publishes detailed information on connection commitments and requests in the review process, broken down by transmission and distribution system operators, on its website.
