Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH (SZFG), a subsidiary of the German company Salzgitter AG, is inviting tenders for the supply of electricity from ground-mounted photovoltaic systems as part of a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA), as well as for the construction and operation of a large-scale on-site battery storage system at the Salzgitter steelworks. According to a statement by SZFG, up to 150 megawatts (MW) of photovoltaic capacity will be required, with supply potentially starting in January 2027 and the contract lasting ten years. Both »pay as produced« and »pay as forecasted« are of interest as forms of delivery.

The location must be in Germany. A key selection criterion is the integration of an on-site storage facility with a corresponding utilisation concept. Interested companies can register until 22 June 2025.

To reconcile the fluctuating energy production of renewable energies with continuous steel production, Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH is issuing a further tender for the investment, construction, and operation of a battery storage facility at the steelworks. This facility will be used proportionately by the partner and Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH.

As part of the »SALCOS« transformation project, the existing carbon-based production process will be replaced with a new steel production method that uses renewable energy. Once this technological changeover is complete, Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH aims to reduce its direct CO₂ emissions by around 95 per cent.
