EU committees reject taxonomy for nuclear and gas, DUH refers to legal opinion

On Tuesday (June 14), the European Parliament’s two committees for the environment and for the economy rejected the European Commission’s draft of the so-called EU taxonomy in its current form. The majority of MEPs voted against the Commission’s planned inclusion of nuclear power and natural gas in the taxonomy, which would entitle respective projects to special financing conditions intended for sustainable technologies and companies. Parliament is scheduled to vote on the Commission’s proposal in plenary in early July.
The German environmental aid organization Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) has published a legal opinion in German and English by lawyer Cornelia Ziehm, according to which »the classification of nuclear power and fossil gas as sustainable investments violates the EU taxonomy regulation anyway«, i.e. would not be legally tenable at all. DUH called on the MEPs to join the vote of the two committees and to prevent »the planned greenwashing«.
