The energy company EnBW has presented a project for a large-scale battery storage facility together with the local council of the town of Philippsburg. One of the largest battery storage facilities in Germany with an output of 400 megawatts and a capacity of 800 megawatt hours is to be built at the Philippsburg power plant site.
The dismantling of the two nuclear power plant units has been underway since 2017 and 2020. The transmission system operator TransnetBW has built a large direct current transformer station on a neighboring part of the energy park. This so-called converter is part of the new direct current connection »ULTRANET« and is intended to transport wind power from northern Germany to southern Germany.
With the new large-scale storage facility, Philippsburg is set to become a central hub and storage location for electricity from renewable energies in Germany. »Philippsburg has been one of the most important energy locations in the whole of Germany for half a century – and our town is set to continue to play this outstanding role as an anchor point and huge storage facility for sustainable power generation,« says Philippsburg’s mayor Stefan Martus.
According to EnBW, the large-scale project is to be realized without state subsidies. In addition to the proceeds from the marketing of the electricity volumes, the storage facility is to be financed by offering grid-supporting services. However, a building permit has not yet been granted and the final investment decision by EnBW is still pending, according to the company. If everything goes according to plan, the project could conceivably be completed by the end of 2027.
