EIC supports development of solar electric car »Lightyear« with €2.5 million

The European Innovation Council (EIC) is investing €2.5 million ($2.8 million) in the Dutch solar electric car company Lightyear through its »Horizon 2020« program of the European Commission. The investment provides additional support to produce their first electric solar car, the »Lightyear One« According to the company, it will be launched in early 2020. »The investment will be used to develop prototypes early in the process so we can build on our knowledge for later iterations,« says Lex Hoefsloot, Lightyear CEO. »Due to its high efficiency and integrated solar cells, the car rarely needs to charge, increasing the appeal of electric driving.« The range is estimated to be at 400 or 800 km.
