The Dutch Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) has unveiled a traditional composite roof tile with an integrated perovskite solar module. The modules achieved an efficiency of up to 13.8 percent. After installation on a curved roof tile, an efficiency of 12.4 percent was maintained. »To the best of my knowledge, this is the world’s first electrically functioning solar roof tile concept based on flexible perovskite solar cells,« said Ilker Dogan, senior scientist at TNO Solar
The roof tiles are the result of a collaboration within the TNO Solar Program, which brings together expertise in materials development, production technologies, and testing. The project was carried out in collaboration with Dutch and European partners and supports the goal of strengthening the solar industry in the Netherlands and Europe.
In the coming period, TNO will work to improve the technology’s lifespan, reliability, and scalability. This is intended to lay the groundwork for the next phase, in which flexible perovskite solar modules can find their way into commercial applications. To this end, TNO founded the spin-off company Perovion Technologies on March 11.
This demonstrator is supported by the Province of North Brabant as part of the »Solar manufacturing industry to Brabant, Solliance 2.0« project. Additional funding for the LUMINOSITY project was provided by the European Union’s »Horizon Europe« program. The work was also partially funded by the »SolarNL« program of the National Growth Fund.
