In 2024, 431.5 billion kilowatt hours of electricity were generated in Germany and fed into the electricity grid. According to preliminary results from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), this was 3.6 per cent less than in 2023. 59.4 per cent of the electricity generated and fed into the grid in Germany in 2024 came primarily from renewable energy sources. Overall, electricity generation from these sources rose by 2.3 per cent year-on-year to 256.4 billion kilowatt hours, reaching a new record high. In 2023, the share of electricity from renewable energies was still 56.0 per cent. In contrast, electricity generation from conventional energy sources in 2024 fell by 11.0 per cent compared to the previous year to 175.1 billion kilowatt hours and a share of 40.6 per cent of domestic electricity generation.
Electricity feed-in from photovoltaics increased significantly by 10.4 per cent to 59.5 billion kilowatt hours in 2024 compared to the previous year. This corresponds to 13.8 per cent of total domestic electricity generation and is the highest share of electricity from photovoltaics in a full year since the survey began in 2018. Electricity feed-in from hydropower also increased significantly by 10.3 per cent to 20.4 billion kilowatt hours in 2024, reaching a share of 4.7 per cent of total electricity generation.
