Construction begins on Portugal's largest solar power plant

French renewable energy company Neoen S.A.S. is beginning construction of what it claims will be the largest solar power plant in Portugal. The 272-megawatt (MW) plant, located in Herdade da Torre Bela in the municipality of Azambuja, consists of the 68 MW Torre Bella Solar sub-project owned by Neoen and the Rio Maior Solar Farm implemented jointly with British renewable energy project developer Aura Power Developments Ltd. The Spanish company Aldesa was commissioned with Engineering, procurement and construction.
Neoen expects an annual electricity yield of more than 500 gigawatt hours, or about 1,840 kilowatt hours per kilowatt of installed capacity. Around 80 percent of the yield is expected to go to the Portuguese state from 2025 via two power purchase agreements, each with a term of 15 years; the remaining energy is to be marketed freely.
