China plans to build solar and wind power plants with a capacity of 450 GW in the Gobi Desert and other desert regions, »Reuters« news agency reports, citing He Lifeng, director of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC). The announcement was made on the sidelines of the National People’s Congress on Saturday. However, high-efficiency coal-fired power plants and ultra-high voltage power transmission lines are also needed to support the stable operation of the grid, the official said. China aims to increase the country’s installed wind and solar capacity to at least 1,200 GW by 2030 and limit carbon emissions.
