Chilean authorities approved 5.4 GW of solar projects over the past 4 years

Chilean environmental authorities have approved 17.1 GW of grid-connected electricty generation projects since 2010, according to a report published by the Chilean Energy Ministry. Of these projects, 59% are represented by renewable energy projects -- 32% alone by solar projects. The 5,339 solar projects approved over the past 4 years, which include both CSP and PV technologies, have a combined capacity of 5,399 MW. Of these projects, 4,647 MW are to be connected to the northern grid Sistema Interconectado del Norte Grande (SING), while the remaining 752 MW are to be connected to the central Chilean grid, the Chile Sistema Interconectado Central (SIC). Despite the large number of approved solar projects, only 39 MW are currently online, with 2 MW connected to the SING and 37 MW connected to the SIC, respectively. Furthermore, Chile’s Energy Ministry revealed that solar projects totaling 274 MW are currently being developed in the country.
