The Chinese battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., limited (CATL) presented three new batteries for electric cars at its first “Super Tech Day” on April 21: the “Freevoy Dual Power Battery”, the second generation of the “Shenxing Superfast Charging Battery” and the “Naxtra” sodium-ion battery.
The dual-power battery is a fast-charging battery that is combined with a separate auxiliary battery to increase performance and range. The range of the Shengxing fast-charging battery has been improved. With a charging rate of 12C, a range of up to 520 kilometers can be achieved in just five minutes. However, this requires an appropriate charging infrastructure.

According to CATL, the new sodium-ion battery “Naxtra” is the first battery of this technology to be produced in series. The Naxtra battery product line comprises two categories: the Naxtra passenger EV battery and the Naxtra 24V heavy-duty battery with integrated start-stop system. Both can be operated in the entire temperature range from -40°C to +70°C. The Naxtra passenger EV battery retains a usable capacity of 90 percent at -40°C. In a state of charge with only ten percent SOC remaining, the Naxtra Passenger EV Battery shows no significant deterioration in performance even at -40°C.

The Naxtra Passenger EV Battery from CATL achieves an energy density of 175Wh/kg, according to CATL the highest in the world among sodium-ion batteries and comparable to LFP batteries. It offers a range of 500 kilometers and can go through more than 10,000 charging cycles, according to CATL. In terms of safety, the Naxtra battery eliminates combustion-promoting factors at the material level and thus achieves a transformative breakthrough from “passive defense” to “intrinsic safety”, according to CATL.
