Axpo builds another »alpine« solar power plant

Swiss energy company Axpo is building another »alpine« solar power plant at around 2,100 meters above zero in the ski resort of Disentis (canton of Graubünden). The 10-megawatt »Ovra Solara Magriel« plant near the 2,485-meter peak of La Muotta (the figure shows a visualization of the planned plant) will supply power to the ski resort’s mountain railway. Construction is scheduled to begin next spring, with partial commissioning in 2025 and full completion in the fall of 2026.
Annual electricity production is estimated at 17 gigawatt hours – a very high yield for Central Europe due to the mountain location. In addition, the alpine location means that a comparatively good yield can be expected even in the winter months, when yields are low at other locations. Axpo speaks of »winter electricity«. At a plant at an altitude of around 2,500 meters that the company had already commissioned in 2021, the yields in the winter months are up to five times higher than the average at sites »in the midlands«, according to the company
The new project is just a small part of Axpo's »solar offensive,« which aims to build 1.2 gigawatts of photovoltaic capacity in Switzerland by 2030.
