Asfinag, the Austrian motorway company, is offering open spaces along the motorway and expressway network for photovoltaic projects. According to Asfinag, the selected sites in Lower Austria and Burgenland cover areas ranging from 900 to 8,000 square metres in the municipalities of St. Valentin, Traismauer, Oberpullendorf, Zurndorf and Nickelsdorf (Karlwald).

The initiative aims to utilise previously unused land for the production of renewable energy, thereby actively contributing to Austria’s energy transition. The locations were selected based on a PV potential analysis. Parameters such as environmental suitability were taken into account, i.e. whether the areas are freely accessible and whether clearing would be necessary. The land will be used under a standardised usage agreement in accordance with Section 28 of the Federal Highway Act.

Interested municipalities, companies or organisations can submit written offers, including their proposed annual fee, to Asfinag by 30 November 2025. The contract will be awarded to the highest bidder.
