Australia on track to add 2 GW of rooftop solar systems in 2019, GEM

Australia is on track to add rooftop solar systems with a capacity of 2,000 MW in 2019. According to Australian environmental consultancy Green Energy Markets (GEM), over the first quarter of 2019 Australia installed over 480 MW of small-scale rooftop capacity. This is 46 percent higher than the first quarter of last year and two and half times greater than the first quarter average across the past 4 years, says the company.
Installations have been rising across all states, but have surged in Victoria since the introduction of a $2,250 rebate. Victoria has traditionally been well behind both Queensland and NSW for installations but moved past them in Q 1. »If the rate of installations in quarter 1 were to be maintained until the end of 2022, it would provide additional generation greater than that due to be lost from the closure of Liddell Power Station.« Liddel’s owner AGL Energy plans to close the 2,000 MW coal-fired power plant located in New South Wales in 2022 as it reaches more than 50 years of operation.
