8/7/2012 - Europe16,148 subscribers Solar boat continues its Mediterranean tour The world’s largest solar-powered boat is cruising the Mediterranean this summer as part of a promotional tour aimed at showing that solar power is a genuine alternative to fossil fuels. The 31 meter-long, 15 meter-wide (101 ft by 49 ft) Tûranor PlanetSolar catamaran recently arrived in Malta following a four-day journey from Sardinia. PlanetSolar relies on two electric motors powered by 537 square meters (5,780 sq ft) of photovoltaic solar cells. The boat also includes energy storage to ensure it never has to rely on fuel. In May, PlanetSolar successfully concluded a 585–day round–the–world journey using only solar power. …
