SOLAR EXPERTS CONVERGE AT PHOTON's 4th PV SAFETY CONFERENCE TO DISCUSS FIRE PREVENTION
March, 2012: Yesterday, industry experts gathered in Berlin at PHOTON's 4th annual PV Safety Conference to discuss how the industry can minimize fire risks associated with photovoltaic (PV) systems.
The fact that solar systems can cause fires has become a recurring theme in German media, and the solar industry was alarmed when a large rooftop PV system caused a fire in Bürstadt, Hessen in 2009. However, today, three years after that fire broke out, a number of new measures have been taken to prevent such fires. Some of these new solutions are already on the market, while others are expected to be implemented soon. Speaking at the conference, senior vice president of Q-Cells SE Karl Heinz Küsters discussed measures the German module maker has taken to reduce the risk of fires. Küsters said that since hotpots in solar cells are created during manufacturing, Q-Cells now uses a thermal imaging camera to examine each solar cell – solar cells that include anomalies are immediately discarded.
